K.A. Kendall’s 7-20-4 Torpedo Maduro Prototype Review (First Impression)

I spoke with Kurt the past week or so and he gave me a sample of a maduro version for the Torpedo vitola.  Because it was the first of perhaps many versions I won’t get into much details as these will probably change.  I did enjoy the subtle notes and nuances of the 7-20-4 corona that I reviewed earlier so I was definitely looking forward to smoking this cigar.

Construction/Appearance:

  • Bumpy wrapper with a few veins but no tears or holes
  • Wrapper appears rustic but darker than the natural version
  • Feels tightly rolled and well packed
  • Same 7-20-4 band and it was placed higher on the cigar
  • Medium weight and well balanced in my hand

Burn/Draw:

  • Cold draw is even and full
  • Smoke was steady stream even when let alone for a minute
  • Burn started wavy but corrected itself in the first inch
  • Draw was nicely balanced even though the cigar started getting hot in the last inch
  • Ash was a beautiful white with some grey mixed in lasting almost 2 inches

Flavor/Aroma:

  • Foot and wrapper has a cedar and espresso aroma
  • Initial draw was of leather and spice
  • 1st third has a sweetness on the inhale reminding me of light caramel followed by earthy and coffee notes and a spicy finish
  • The 2nd third continued with the caramel sweetness, dark chocolate, woody notes tossed in between and a lingering spicy finish
  • The final third still has that sweetness but wood, earth and spice play a more dominant role

Final Thoughts:

  • The maduro wrapper is a great alternative to the natural line
  • Medium to Full Bodied cigar with medium complexity
  • The construction, burn and draw were all very good
  • Absolutely impressed with the amount of smoke this cigar was giving off in the last few inches
  • I think this cigar could be a hit with this blend but wouldn’t be surprised if some more tweaks were made
